Writing Update: It’s May Now Edition

Back when I first started writing, I had lots of posts about different ideas and things that I was eager to share. These days I try to keep everything a secret and so I end up not posting as much, so please forgive me for this.

Sooner or later, I’ll reveal the title for Memory Blood 2. While the second installment was originally referred to by just a number, that’s not very descriptive, is it? The name reveals a lot about the book so I don’t know that I want to reveal it just yet, but I’ll likely put MB2 up for pre-order on Kindle so the description and title will be available then along with some cover art that may or may not be temporary.

I think the writing and editing for MB2 has been going very well so I’m confident it will be out on time. The first time it got delayed was because I chose an inferior direction. The second time it got delayed was because I wanted to give myself extra time. I’ll use the remainder of May and the next few months to make sure everything is as it should be. I created some tough situations in this book, but everything is really coming together and anyone who liked Memory Blood should enjoy MB2 even more.

That said, there is a shift in focus. Memory Blood focused on Mara and Dustin while Memory Blood 2 expands out a little bit. Rather than the relationship between two people, there are multiple characters this time around and so balancing the characters relative to one another is one of the biggest challenges this time around.

Writing Update: Good Progress Edition

This week I came up with some cool new ideas for Creswood Part 2 that have pushed me into the second half of the story. The difficulty level is climbing and I’m hoping to think of even more difficult tricks to include. It’s tough writing tricks for a story that’s already been “solved”, but that’s part of the fun of this extra super difficult scenario.

Speaking of which, I’ve decided to make both Creswood Mysteries and its successor available for free at the end of the month! You’ll be able to purchase the Kindle or iBooks edition for 99 cents if you choose, but if you’d rather not spend the money then feel free to stop by and get both for free. The final story will also be made available for free, but I might also gather all three stories and publish them together as Creswood Collection or something like that as well.

There’s not much else to say this week, but just to summarize my current plans:

End of April 2015 – Creswood 2

Summer 2015 – Memory Blood 2

Winter 2015 – Creswood 3

2016 – Memory Blood 3 and 4 (end of the series)

Writing Update: April 2015 Begins Edition

It’s time for a fun announcement and a not so fun announcement.

Memory Blood 2 is being pushed back to this summer in order to allow for more quality assurance time. While I’m capable of finishing the writing by the end of this month, it’s important to have others read it and have ample time to provide feedback and so the release date will be sometime in August with pre-orders beginning a few weeks before that. While I apologize for the delay, I guarantee that this book is going to be something truly special and so I thank you for supporting me and waiting a bit longer.

In the meantime, Creswood Part 2 will be released at the end of this month and made available for FREE! This second part of the story is like a bonus high difficulty scenario and should be very enjoyable for both people who solved Creswood Mysteries and those who didn’t. The spotlight will shine on information that had only been previously hinted at and will feature some fun puzzles to solve as well and some puzzles that might just break your spirit and make you question everything. Maybe.

I’m transitioning into a new writing schedule as well that should result in releases of the highest quality from here on out. I always believe in the quality of my books, but there’s also always room to improve and I think it’s nice to give books some space before they’re published so there’s time to focus purely on quality rather than rushing to meet a deadline. The delay of Memory Blood 2 is part of this transition and if things go well then Memory Blood 3 will be out at the end of the year as well which will hopefully make up for the delays up until now.

Thanks for your understanding again and I’m really excited to share the new stories I’m writing with you!

Writing Update: February 2015’s End Edition

  • Today I’ll be providing my update in short bullet points
  • Memory Blood 2 quality assurance has begun with Story 1
  • Story 2 will be made available to QA readers soon and Story 3 is still being written
  • Work on Creswood Part 2 continues in the background
  • Thoughts about the next Monument Series book are growing stronger and stronger

That’s all for now. Next week I’ll aim for a longer post elaborating on my progress a little bit more.

Writing Update: February 2015 Edition

Memory Blood 2 surpassed the 50% completion mark a while ago and right now I’m determining the shape of the third story. I’ve been very open to changing the plot and character arcs, but now that most of those have fallen into place the shape of the remaining stories is something I don’t have to worry about too much. The characters are on a certain trajectory that will take them into the finale of Memory Blood 2 and the plot complements the journey of our cast this time around and I’m very proud of the work I’ve been doing. I’ve said it before, but I think Memory Blood 2 will manage to surpass the first novel in terms of quality despite how much I love the story of the first book. This is something that is very important to me and the major reason why I delayed the novel to April of this year. In a worst case scenario, I think Memory Blood 2 will release this May although I’m still aiming for April.

According to the current plan, Memory Blood 3 will be released later this year as well but I’m open to changing things around and doing what’s best for the series. I think Creswood’s sequel will definitely be released this year seeing as that’s a smaller project, but Memory Blood 3 could be replaced by a different work and delayed to 2016. As much as I love trying to schedule things, my inability to write full-time means that I’m severely limited in that regard. If my focus is on other work most of the time then it can be difficult to force time to be creative and deliver the best stories that I can. While I used to take this personally in the past, I’ve come to accept the reality that until I’m writing full-time there’s not much point in creating a writing schedule (I’ve learned a lot about what I would do if I were writing full-time, however). I still have targets for various things, but I’m not too concerned about missing those targets if it means delivering the best work I can.

Ideally, the ad campaigns I’m working on right now will bring Memory Blood and my other books to the attention of more people and allow me to allocate more time to writing without worrying that I should be working on something more profitable. I know that this will happen one day, but I’m doing my best to ensure it starts happening now.

Writing Update: This Winter Edition

In order to make Memory Blood 2 the best novel it can be I’m pushing back the release to the first half of 2015. I spent 8 months working on Memory Blood and foolishly thought I could get the sequel out in half that time. I believe that quality comes first and so I am delaying the release of the second book by approximately four months and it should be out sometime in April 2015.

However, that doesn’t mean that something won’t be released this Winter! I’ve decided to do something fun and surprising which will be announced before Christmas and will be released just a few days after. This work will be more similar to a short novel and will be smaller in size but very, very fun. It’s fun to be spontaneous every now and then so I’m not saying anything for now but I think it will make the wait for Memory Blood 2 just a little bit easier.

I really dislike delaying works, but Memory Blood 2 is still in production! I will be actively working on the book up until its release in April and making it stronger and stronger. This means the third and fourth books in the series will also be delayed but I have no issue doing so in order to make the series as strong and enjoyable as possible. Thank you very much for your understanding! My writing habits have only improved since I  began publishing in 2012 and I’ve been getting better each year and look forward to continue improving them in the future.

Writing Update: Happy Halloween 2014 Edition

There are only 2 months left in 2014 now. I really hadn’t thought of that until I wrote it just now…

Today, I spent some time reading the blog of my favorite author. And, as expected, I just so happened upon entries that mirrored the exact same issues I’m having with Memory Blood 2. To put it simply, I’m writing and re-writing and writing and re-writing. But, that’s far from a bad thing. That’s an extraordinarily good thing. I’ve thrown out thousands and thousands of words of writing this time around for the sake of making the story better. I’m very proud that I have the strength to do that and I know it’s going to make Memory Blood 2 exactly the type of work it should be.

To summarize where I’m at, the total word count is at about 17,000 right now. The first story’s structure has been completely locked in place now for weeks and the writing on that is finished so I won’t be touching that until editing. The second story has two major plots, one of which is fine as it is, and the other which I’m rethinking. The third, fourth, and fifth stories are all in various states but the core ideas are in place and they probably won’t give me as much trouble as the first two stories have.

If I reach 30,000 words by November 15th then I should be on schedule. If I’m a little less than that then I’ll be a little bit behind schedule. Either way, I doubt there’s going to be a delay in the release of Memory Blood 2 and it should still be out by the end of this year. Of course, as always, if that changes between now and the end of this month then the official announcement will reflect the delay in the release so there won’t be any last-minute cancellation surprises.

2 Weeks Until Memory Blood!

This week I finalized the first story and began working on finalizing the second. As I’ve re-read older works of mine, I’ve noticed a few typos managed to make it through despite multiple editing passes by two different people so I’m doing my best to make sure I catch every single one for Memory Blood. After the intensity with which I went through the first story, I can’t imagine that there’s a single word out of place and, if there is, I apologize deeply >_<

The issues I’ve faced over the last year have also begun to disappear meaning that my writing will continue to be more and more of a priority through the end of this year and into the next. I’d like to produce a great deal of content for everyone, but I’m keeping things realistic and I’m happy with what I’ve got scheduled so far. One day in the future I’d like to be able to release many stories per year, but for now please enjoy Memory Blood this month and its sequel at the end of the year!

Writing Update: 21 Days Until Memory Blood Edition

Yesterday I put all of the formatting for the book in place and now it looks like a proper novel. In the process of editing, the word count now sits slightly lower than it was before at 36,000 words. I think the total word count will likely end up closer to 40,000 by the time of release but this still falls short of my original goal of writing something longer than a Library Series book.

Arbitrarily extending the word count isn’t something that I’m interested in though. The announced price matches the book’s size, the story I wanted to tell has been told, and I’m very happy with what Memory Blood has become so and everything remains on schedule for release as it always has. Honesty is something that I value so I’m happy to be able to announce these things rather than disappointed that I fells short of one of my goals. The integrity of the work and the value I place upon it is high and so I’m greatly looking forward to release day.

Also, please remember, that the book will be available for free on Kindle on release day (August 15th)! Even getting a free copy will be a great display of support so I encourage everyone who is interested in doing so to do so.

Memory Blood QA Imminent

Over the next few days I’ll be editing Memory Blood and then sending it off for Quality Assurance testing with a friend of mine. With previous books, I often had a QA period of about 2 weeks that ended three days or so before launch. There was an awful lot of pressure with a tight schedule like that so this time the QA period will last for the entirety of June and, based upon the type of feedback received, the release date will be decided and announced soon after.

Currently I have a target for the release date that I’m confident will be hit, but if QA reveals a significant amount of work needs to be done then the book’s release will be delayed a few weeks but still be released this summer. And now that I’m on the topic of release dates, I apologize for cancelling the remaining character reveals. Originally, there were going to be eight stories in the first book but developing eight unique environments proved to be more challenging than anticipated and so four stories will be included in the first book. However, the amount of content will not change! The only thing changing is the number of stories and the amount of content in the book will be roughly the same as it was originally planned to be at a minimum of 50,000 words.

As the QA process begins, I’ll not only be reviewing the first book but planning the second as well so that it can be released before the year’s end as I originally planned. Unfortunately, it looks like The Orin Chronicles and The Academy Series may not continue this year so I’m glad I set those as bonus goals which shows that I was thinking realistically at the beginning of this year.
