Memory Blood World Information Reveal!

The official page has now been updated with links to the new Story and World sections! The concepts I’ve known for so long have now finally been revealed to everyone and I hope this will be sufficient for beginning to understand what Memory Blood is about. I’ve done my best to reflect the tone of the series as accurately as possible which was much easier to do now that I’ve finished writing the first story of the eight planned to be included in the first book.

Something you’ll notice on the updated page as well is that character reveals will start this April. For a couple of months, new characters will be revealed each week with some descriptions that will help you learn a little bit more about the upcoming stories for the first book. By the time the reveals start I’ll hopefully be close to halfway done with the writing so I should know the characters well enough to reveal them properly.

Since writing, none of the major concepts have changed but there have been some slight adjustments in the way I decided to write the characters so please allow me some time so that I can make sure I’m providing accurate information. Because the first book is being written, things are still subject to change but I don’t think any of the information revealed today is going to change at all because it’s been in place since last year. To change it now would be to remove the basic premises of the series and if I plan on doing that then there’s no real point in doing any writing to begin with 😀

Writing Update: February 2014 W3 Edition

I don’t have anymore good hints to give before the Memory Blood World Information reveal at the end of the month, so it’s back to progress reports like this for now.

The Orin Chronicles

Krakken (Volume 8): Writing – 60% complete
Volumes 9-10: Concept Phase
Volumes 11-13: Not in active development

Notes: I haven’t been working on Volume 8 for a while now but I intend to get back to it sooner rather than later. Once the ending is decided the writing should go quickly and if all goes well that might happen by next Friday.

The Academy Series

Second Volume: Not in active development, writing 38% complete

Notes: The progress here has jumped slightly as well. I had an idea for a solution to a problem that’s been troubling me so I wrote it down. I don’t think I’ll get back to actively writing Second Volume for a while now, but I’m glad I was able to see that I almost made a big mistake with one of my ideas. Even though the idea itself was good, I started executing it incorrectly which caused me quite the headache. As of now, a fall release seems very likely though!

Memory Blood

Book One: Concept Phase. Writing – 8% complete

Notes: The time I scheduled for writing hasn’t even come yet and I’m already almost 1/10 of the way through the plot! I’ve been slacking with the concept phase though, but all the things I need to have decided by the end of February will surely be done by then. I’m really happy with the schedule I created for Memory Blood and there should be no doubts about the release of the first book this summer. Because The Orin Chronicles and The Academy Series became difficult to write because they were so spontaneous, I took a great deal of time to plan things out for this series and everything is going as intended. The balancing of planning and spontaneity has me in good spirits whenever I open up the Memory Blood documents I’m working with.

Writing Update: Energy Renewal Edition

Today was a very fun day. I’m not even sure about everything that happened today for various reasons, but I was able to figure out something fun and useful. For a long time, I struggled with ‘plotting’ versus ‘writing’. At a certain point, you want to just start writing but that can distract you from carefully plotting. It’s fun to plot so that you can write well, but it’s also fun to write spontaneously and let the plot develop from there. You can’t quite have the best of both worlds…

Unless of course, you can. The answer has been staring me in the face for a long time and I’ve just finally noticed it now. It seems that in 2011 I learned how to write one book, in 2012 I learned to write a series, in 2013 I learned to plan ahead, and in 2014 I’ve learned…

Well, it’s just too good of a secret to reveal just like that! To write and to plan at the same time… just what sort of a technique must that be? I’m going to keep it a secret for now but my spirits are now higher than ever. So far tonight I’ve already written 2700 words of material for various things. I’m looking forward to using this technique more in the future and seeing if it turns out well. If it does, I’ll be nice and reveal it at some point. If it fails, then just forget this blog post ever existed.

Higanbana: Second Night Review

First, a brief introduction. This is the second (and as of now, final) installment in Ryuukishi07’s short story series Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni. The game features seven short stories and, unlike previous 07th Expansion works, does not include the first installment. The setting is a large school whose night is ruled over by youkai that feast off of the souls of the students in various ways, but is equally just as much about the middle school-aged students as it is about the youkai.

While I didn’t write a review of the First Night, I found the stories to be good but just a bit repetitive in their themes which stopped the work from truly being good. With the Second Night, there’s definitely more variety which made the stories much more effective. By the end of it, I was wishing that there was more to read so I find myself (in a very rare case) agreeing with the majority opinion which is, in this case, that Second Night is better than First Night.

While it’s not necessary to read the First Night before the Second Night, the individual stories aren’t totally separate like in some short story collections so I would advise reading the first installment first. While the stories aren’t intended to be particularly scary, I’d still say that it’s something best enjoyed at night rather than in broad daylight.

Memory Blood Speculation: Episode 2

Just over 20 days until the world information for the series is revealed so there’s plenty of time left for speculation.

Last week, I talked about the series having a certain intensity to it. Intensity is a rather vague term and it could apply to a lot of different things. The images in the logo probably won’t tell us very much about that, but there’s probably some information to be gleaned by looking at them.

There’s a tree, a hexagonal pattern in the sphere, and roots with shining lights at the end of them. Surely this is an iconic image from the series and something that will be understood by the end of the first book, perhaps in the finale… or perhaps early on. The first half of the story of book one has already been decided so I already know the answer to this.

Anyways, it looks as if the tree is contained within that sphere. Maybe that’s the reason why there are strange sparkling lights in the roots. Whatever the reason, it’s surely not just any ordinary tree. I’m sure it doesn’t take much to figure that out, so perhaps I’m not offering any useful information. Then again, if you can reason this far all you have to do is connect the elements present in the logo in order to… well, maybe it’s not that easy after all… once again, who could possibly know the answers to these queries? ^_~

Regardless of all that, I’m sure this is a topic that can be speculated about even after the 28th. While the logo does a good job of representing the series, it might be the case that “the reason why that is” won’t be understood until the first book has been read. So, as a bonus hint, I’ll say there are certainly many of those shining lights attached to the trees roots. There are many that can’t be seen in the logo either because they’re not bright enough or they’re not attached to the roots at all. The key concept here is probably ‘many’.

Memory Blood Speculation: Episode 1

Currently, the information about the world of this series is set to be revealed on February 28th.

But, before it’s officially revealed, maybe it’s possible to guess some things about the series beforehand…

While the logo revealed is colored a dark red and ‘Blood’ is in the title, it’s likely the series won’t be graphic and gruesome, I think. The deep red probably relates to the intensity of the series more than anything and the word ‘Blood’ could mean anything just like the word ‘Memory’ could mean anything. That will probably be a mystery hinted at quite early on, so I won’t say anymore for now.

If intensity is a quality of the series, however, maybe there’s more that can be deduced. After giving out such generous hints, however, I think I’ll probably wait until next week to say anymore about it. If you’d like, try to figure out as much about the series as you can by the 28th and then check to see how much you were able to figure out.
