Writing Update: Placing Hints Edition

The editing of Library Second Section: Abandoned is going very well. Besides making it easier to read and clarifying information, I’ve also added a great deal of hints. If you were to read it and then go back and read it again, these hints will probably become very obvious. At least that’s what I’m aiming for.

Actually a nice amount of hints concerning the ending of the series also appear. I’ve been struggling with their presentation though. I want them to exist so that you can go back and say “So this really was planned all along!”. These types of hints are difficult to create. I have plenty of time to work on them though. 15 days remain until August 12th.

So in this 1/2 of a month I’ll be refining Abandoned even more. Another 1,000 words have already been added which brings the total (including Monument) up to 19,000 words. Now that I look at that number, maybe I’ve already placed too many hints. I should save some for Third Section…

Writing Update: Monument Retrospective Edition

Oh, it’s good. Much better than I thought.

After I first released Monument, I thought it was terrible. “It’s filled with traps and not entertaining at all. Who would want to read this?” And now after reading it many months later I am very happy with it. It really is a nice beginning point, a nice introduction. All I could see were the traps that I left within, but with the mindset of a new reader, those traps are fun. You don’t know that they’re there and they spin a fun tale.

It’s certainly not the best work ever written, but it is much better than I had expected. As I edit Abandoned and consider the plot for Third Section, I am now truly excited.

My despair in February wasn’t very grounded in reality. I should never given up on the series, not even for a day.

With my spirit that increases with each day, I promise to deliver the best series I can.

Writing Update: Stuff to Do Edition

Library Second Section: Monument releases on August 12th. Right now I’d say it’s about 80% done. I finished the rough draft in May and went through and edited it in June. But what exactly do I have to do now?

1st: I would like to read through Abandoned again and make more edits. I’ll use this time to review certain hints as well and either remove, add to, or clarify them.

2nd: I want to read through Monument and go straight into Abandoned to see how well it transitions. I won’t rewrite any sections of Monument, but I can rewrite the beginning of Abandoned if it’s necessary. There is a change in perspective between these two parts so I want to make sure it is done well.

In the past I used to hate editing. I thought the purpose was to make the work ‘better’ by catching typos and rewording things. That isn’t entirely true though. Editing is the process by which the work becomes enjoyable. By looking at the transition between Monument and Abandoned, spreading hints, looking at it from the perspectives of different readers it’s easy to see that this is not improvement for the sake of improvement. For the first time I am extremely happy to edit my work.

I’m very excited to be at this stage.

Writing Update: “Goodbye, Camp” Edition

I’m done with Camp NaNoWriMo. I’ve never been successful with NaNoWriMo either (my first was ’09 and I tried again in ’10). I can do it for the first few days, but then everything goes horribly wrong. :3

It wasn’t a complete waste of time though. I now understand that Third Section can’t go the direction I tried to take it. While everything is still canon, it is too much of a deviation from the main story. I may find a way to sneak some of that material in there, but it definitely won’t be as in-depth as it would have been. So now I’m thinking of new ways to handle Third Section.

Abandoned is also nearly complete now. I’ll go through it at least once more to clean everything up, and I’ll probably rewrite the very end (so that it is presented better) but other than that it has all the relevant information. In addition to some extra things that I slipped in there. Though now that I think about it there are two small story elements I might want to expand upon a little bit more.

I’m very happy with the way the story has formed, and I hope it isn’t too much of a twist. As I mentioned previously the atmosphere in Monument differs greatly from the atmosphere in Abandoned. I’ve spent a lot of time with the material so it makes sense to me, but I’ll try to look at it from a viewpoint of a person who has just finished reading Monument.

Camp NaNoWriMo 2011 July Session: Day 3

Currently I’m a few words behind today’s goal of 4800 words. Third Section is starting to give me some trouble. In a way, I’m not really writing Library Third Section. This is more like a giant pool of information from which I’ll construct Third Section’s plot. Even with editing, the way I’m writing right now is not how I’ll present it.

There are still a lot of benefits to this project though. I’m getting a chance to write for characters and places that have yet to appear. So when I go to organize the plot, I’ll know them a lot better. I can already tell the way this information is presented will greatly change. That is what is at the forefront of my mind right now. “What is the best way to show this to the reader?”

The presentation in Monument is mysterious, but that’s okay because you don’t quite understand the series yet. The presentation in Abandoned is closer to reality than Monument and gives you a new way to think about the first section. So what type of presentation and perspective is necessary in Third Section? That is what I must decide. Right now I’m thinking I might hold off on some information and include that in Fourth Section. I’ll continue to think on this as the project goes on (just as I always have).

I’ve always found the idea of thinking about thinking (metacognition) extremely fascinating. There are some traces of that characteristic of mine in Abandoned, but I tried to keep that to a minimum.

Camp NaNoWriMo 2011 July Session: Day 1

Day 1: Success. I exceeded my word goal of about 1600 words and reached 1888. For my Camp project I am writing the rough draft of Library Third Section. I would say more, but I haven’t released Abandoned yet! All I can say is that I am extremely happy with the story direction for both Library 2 and Library 3 (I love Library 1 as well).

There’s also the benefit to writing the rough draft of Library 3 while I’m working on editing 2. Information begins to trickle down. It’s easier to place hints or add in missing dialogue when you know you will be focusing on certain things. No “new” information is being included in Library 2, but I’ve changed the presentation a bit. For the better. 😀

Because I’m supposed to write 50,000 words for Camp that means that Library Third Section will be significantly longer than the first two. It will probably be the largest in the series as I anticipate Library 4 will be the last part and will be a good size, but less than 50,000 words. But it is important to remember that nothing is set in stone. The original idea for Library 3 is vastly different than what I am writing now. The elements from the original version are still a part of the mythology, but the narrative itself is different.

All the story elements are coming together and once again, I couldn’t be happier with the direction the story is taking.
